In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Jewel Parham and Dr. Danielle Jeudy to explore representation, mentorship, and systemic change in behaviour analysis. Grounded in their work ACTing for Change, we unpack how values-driven action and organizational accountability can move the field beyond awareness into meaningful change. We discuss the realities behind the statistic that only ~5.83% of BCBAs identify as Black, and how that impacts access to mentorship, supervision, leadership, and opportunity. The conversation dives into the distinction between mentorship and sponsorship, the importance of building pipelines—not just hiring—and why sustainable systems matter more than performative equity efforts. We also explore emotional and cultural labour, barriers to supervision, and how ACT principles can guide organizations toward measurable, values-aligned change.

What if the biggest problem in ABA isn’t the client—but the system?
In this episode, Ben sits down with Michael Conteh to unpack the hidden forces shaping burnout, turnover, and growth in ABA organizations. Drawing from decades of experience scaling a company and consulting across the field, Michael breaks down why traditional clinical thinking alone isn’t enough—and how leaders can evolve to meet the complexity of modern ABA.

In this episode of Behaviour Speak, Ben Reiman is joined by Dianna Yip, behaviour analyst and practitioner with over a decade of experience building services in Hong Kong.
Dianna shares her journey from Vancouver to Hong Kong and what it was like entering a system with limited services, minimal regulation, and little awareness of ABA or PBS. Over time, she helped grow access, build community, and shift perceptions—often starting from scratch.
This conversation explores how culture shapes behaviour support, from parenting expectations to professional practice. Dianna explains why positive behaviour support (PBS) has been more readily accepted than ABA in Hong Kong, and how language, history, and collaboration play a role.
Together, they unpack:
The realities of autism services in Hong Kong
Why ABA is often misunderstood—and how PBS helps bridge the gap
The challenges of privately funded care and lack of regulation
Cultural values like compliance, academic success, and authority
How to balance respect for culture with person‑centred practice
The conversation also dives into emerging ideas that are still gaining traction in the region:
Assent-based practice and mutual respect
Neurodiversity and shifting from charity to empowerment
Moving from compliance to collaboration
Dianna also shares her work in building international practitioner communities, including the Global PBS Coalition, aimed at bringing more diverse perspectives into behaviour science.
This is a thoughtful, grounded conversation about what happens when behavioural science meets culture—and how we can do better when we listen, adapt, and stay curious.

What does truly culturally responsive autism support look like—and who should lead it?
In this episode, Ben speaks with Dr. Davis Henderson, Dr. Candi Running Bear, and Dr. Olivia Lindly about their work adapting the Parents Taking Action program for Diné (Navajo) families. Together, they unpack how geography, language, family structure, and cultural values shape access to autism services—and how their team is working alongside communities to close those gaps.
From telehealth delivery across vast rural regions to adapting AAC tools in Indigenous languages, this conversation highlights what it really takes to move beyond “one-size-fits-all” care.
The team also shares their innovative next step: empowering parents to train educators—flipping the traditional model of expertise on its head.
What You’ll Learn
Why autism awareness and services remain limited in many Indigenous communities
How the Diné Parents Taking Action program was culturally adapted
The role of community advisory boards in ethical, effective research
How telehealth unexpectedly improved access and connection

In this powerful episode of Behaviour Speak, Ben sits down with Oliver Roschke and John Wooderson of Constructional Solutions to explore how the constructional approach can transform positive behaviour support.
Together, they unpack how many PBS systems—particularly within highly regulated environments—have drifted toward risk management, compliance, and behaviour reduction, often losing sight of the original aim: improving quality of life.
Oliver and John challenge the field to move away from a pathological orientation focused on “problem behaviours” and instead ask a much more human question:
What does this person want their life to look like?
The conversation explores:
The origins of PBS and its evolution in Australia
The influence of Israel Goldiamond, Tom Gilbert, Ted Carr, and Risley
Why restrictive practices can become systemically reinforced
How “problem behaviour” may be the most efficient path to valued outcomes
The power of dual social contracts with both participants and staff
Case examples involving school trauma, dementia care, social isolation, and highly restrictive environments
What practitioners can do tomorrow to start moving from a pathological to a constructional approach to PBS
This episode is both a critique and an invitation: to build systems, services, and supports that center autonomy, meaningful outcomes, and human dignity.
Key takeaway:Don’t start with what needs to stop. Start with where the person wants to go.

In this episode, Ben speaks with Rahma Farah, Ikram Buralle, Suaad Jama, and Nasteya Mahamoud of the Somali Behaviour Analysis Association, a growing, community-led initiative focused on expanding autism awareness and behaviour analytic services for Somali populations. Drawing from their experiences across Somalia and the diaspora, the group shares the realities of introducing ABA in a region where awareness of autism is still emerging, stigma remains a significant barrier, and access to trained professionals is extremely limited. Through advocacy, education, and community-building, they are working to lay the foundation for sustainable, culturally relevant services—while also inspiring the next generation of Somali behaviour analysts.

In this powerful and deeply personal episode, Ben sits down with Dr. Setareh (Star) Moslemi, an Iranian behaviour analyst whose journey into the field of ABA was shaped by displacement, loss, and a profound sense of responsibility. Growing up in Iran as a member of the Baháʼí Faith, Star experienced systemic barriers to education and opportunity. At 16, her family made the difficult decision to leave Iran in search of a future where she and her siblings could access education. Shortly after arriving in Turkey, her father—who had risked everything to make that journey possible—passed away. That experience became a defining moment. In this conversation, Star reflects on how her father’s sacrifice, her identity, and her lived experience shaped her path into behaviour analysis—and her ongoing mission to expand autism support for Farsi-speaking families, many of whom face significant barriers to accessing services.

Motivational Interviewing For Behaviour Analysts with Dr. Monica Gilbert

Friday Apr 10, 2026
In this episode of Behaviour Speak, Ben sits down with Dr. Monica Gilbert to unpack what’s often missing in behaviour analysis: true engagement. While clinicians are trained in evidence-based interventions, many still struggle with caregiver buy-in, staff engagement, and sustained change. Dr. Gilbert argues the issue isn’t the science—it’s the conversation. Drawing from her work in clinical psychology and behaviour analysis, she introduces motivational interviewing (MI) as more than a technique—it’s a way of being. From understanding ambivalence to aligning with a client’s stage of change, this conversation challenges the compliance mindset and replaces it with collaboration, autonomy, and meaningful partnership. If you’ve ever felt like your interventions “should work” but aren’t landing—this episode is your missing piece.

Thursday Apr 02, 2026
What happens when there are no autism services in your country? In this episode, Ben speaks with Maxcia Williams, a parent, advocate, and behaviour technician in the Turks & Caicos Islands, about her journey raising a son with autism in a system that didn’t yet exist—and how she helped build one. From navigating stigma and cultural myths to founding the Hope Foundation for Autism Awareness, Maxcia shares what it means to move from isolation to impact. This conversation explores culturally responsive care, workforce challenges in small communities, and the power of caregiver-led change. At the heart of the episode is Israel—Maxcia’s son—whose journey into self-advocacy, homeschooling, and authorship reminds us that autism is not a limitation, but a different path.

A Compassionate Approach to Exposure Therapy with Danielle Cohen
Friday Mar 20, 2026
Friday Mar 20, 2026
In this episode, Ben sits down with Danielle Cohen to explore Constructional Exposure Therapy (CET)—an emerging, compassionate approach grounded in the constructional framework of behaviour analysis. Rather than focusing on eliminating fear or escape behaviour, CET identifies the behaviour the person needs to access meaningful outcomes—and systematically teaches it in a way that maintains choice, assent, and low distress throughout. Danielle shares how this approach: - Reframes reinforcement through the lens of critical consequences - Uses shaping with negative reinforcement in a practical, ethical way - Prioritizes multiple pathways to success (and genuine assent) - Allows learners to opt out—without stopping progress Through powerful case examples—including supporting a learner through a blood draw and teaching independent nail clipping in under an hour—this episode highlights what’s possible when we truly align effectiveness with compassion.

Behaviour Analysis in Bulgaria with Zornitsa Ivanova , M.A., BCBA
Friday Mar 06, 2026
Friday Mar 06, 2026
In this episode of Behaviour Speak, I speak with Zornitsa Ivanova, the first board certified behaviour analyst living and working in Bulgaria.
Zornitsa shares her journey from special education and child psychology into applied behaviour analysis (ABA), and what it has been like introducing evidence-based autism intervention in a country where the field barely existed a decade ago.
From translating ABA resources into Bulgarian to helping train the next generation of practitioners, Zornitsa is helping build the foundation for behaviour analysis in Eastern Europe.
If you’re interested in global behaviour analysis, autism services, or the international expansion of ABA, this conversation offers a fascinating look at what it takes to grow a field from the ground up.

This episode is a special compilation recorded at the 2025 Ontario Association for Behaviour Analysis Conference, where I had the chance to sit down with four outstanding poster presenters whose work represents the next wave of thinking in our field.
From mapping service access across Ontario using statistical modelling… to advancing cultural responsiveness in ABA… to examining bilingual instruction and innovative approaches to teaching safety skills — these conversations highlight how emerging scholars are pushing behaviour analysis forward in meaningful, practical ways.
This episode is presented by our founding university partner, Western Education — home to the Doctor of Education in the Field of Applied Behaviour Analysis — a program designed for experienced professionals ready to lead in clinical practice, research, and systems-level change.
